It’s a story about Bea Uusma’s own possession with the story of the expedition as such. Because this is a book about love, about being possessed. Unfortunately, the latter part of the title got lost in translation.

The full title of this book in Swedish Is “The Expedition: My Love Story”. Thirty-three years later their dead bodies are found, together with their diaries. Instead they crash on the ice sheet, drift in the wrong direction, and eventually end up in the desolated White Island in October the same year. Three men set off from an arctic island near Spitsbergen in an ill-equipped, leaking hydrogen balloon in the summer of 1897. Right now, as I type this in Stockholm, White Island is glowing.” In dark solitude of the Arctic Ocean, though no one can see it. A story about the youngest member of the expedition leaving his soon to be wife on the mainland, living on hope and writing letters to her during the expedition that were found among everything else thirty years later.īea Uusuma was awarded the August Prize in 2013 for the book. Among photographs, autopsy protocols and the search for new evidence is personal letters representing another story. The book is both a non-fictitious detective story, a biographical narrative about the author's obsession and a heart breaking love story. When others read a book about a mystery and suspect there is something to discover but ignore it, she actually manages to find financiers and gathers her own expedition, and sets out for the North Pole. When others watch a documentary and discusses it later, she studies to become a doctor, and graduates with the attitude to finally being able to investigate the scientific and biological elements profoundly – hopefully with the truth within reach. While others think something is interesting, and leave it at that, she, at the age of twelve, writes a melody for the Swedish Eurovision with lyrics about Trichinella Spiralis infection, Trichinosis - the commonly considered cause of death of the expedition participants, in the late 70's. The author, Bea Uusma, is determined to find the cause of death. After a while they managed to get ashore an ampty island they name White Island, where they spend their last days despite their supplies of food, clothes and weapons. The year was 1897 and Salomon August Andrée, Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg had to drag their two hundred kilos heavy sledges across the ice, trying to avoid the holes of open water, only to discover that the ice drifted in the opposite direction. It turns out they crashed on the ice in the middle of nowhere, only three days into their adventure. Wszystko to znaleziono obok ich ciał w obozowisku. Przez niemal sto lat badacze Arktyki, dziennikarze i lekarze próbowali rozwiązać zagadkę: co tak naprawdę wydarzyło się na wyspie? Co spowodowało śmierć trzech członków ekspedycji? Mieli przecież dużo pożywienia, ciepłe ubrania, skrzynie z amunicją i broń. Żaden z członków wyprawy nie wiedział, jak utrzymać się przy życiu w warunkach arktycznych.
Ale po co ciągnęli ze sobą do końca kilka tomów encyklopedii, spinacze, krawaty, szalik z różowego jedwabiu, obrus? Zapisują: „Tu każdy dzień mija jak inny. Na początku każdy z nich miał ciągnąć sanie o wadze 200 kilogramów, ale ostatecznie przepakowali je i zostawili dużą część wyposażenia.
Wobec innych wypraw, które kończyły się sukcesem, ta w ogóle nie powinna była się odbyć. Nie przebyli nawet jednej trzeciej odległości do bieguna, nie udało im się nawet dotrzeć najdalej na północ – oni wylądowali na 82° 56’, przed nimi norwescy polarnicy dotarli już dalej. Trzech mężczyzn o minimalnej wiedzy na temat Arktyki znalazło się w środku koszmaru. W dziennikach można przeczytać, że po kilku dniach w balonie musieli awaryjnie lądować pośrodku wielkiej kry i przez kolejne miesiące próbowali wrócić na stały ląd. Trzydzieści trzy lata później zupełnym przypadkiem inna wyprawa natrafia na resztki ich ostatniego obozowiska na lodowcowej wyspie. Trzej członkowie wyprawy polarnej ze Sztokholmu: Salomon August Andrée, Knut Frænkel i najmłodszy – dwudziestoczteroletni, Nils Strindberg, odlatują wypełnionym wodorem balonem o nazwie „Orzeł” w stronę bieguna północnego.
